Day 1: Departure from Culata and walk to the second refuge

Departure in the morning from Mérida by public transport towards La Culata. After about 1 hour of driving, we will reach the end of the road at La Culata at 3000 meters above sea level. On the way, vast meadows alternate with dense vegetation, made up of frailejones with their fine stems and fluffy leaves, from the edelweiss family. We camp in the evening near an old sheepfold at an altitude of 3800 m after 4 to 5 hours of walking.

Accommodation: Night in a tent.
Communication: No network.

Day 2: Ascent of the Pan de Azúcar peak and then return to the Sheepfold

Our hike continues to the base of the peak, where we leave all the equipment. We gradually climb to the top of Pan de Azúcar, the path passes through a sandy path where the largest frailejones are found (higher than 3 meters!). At 4400m, the frailejones no longer grow and we continue towards the summit through a desert and sandy landscape. Finally the top! 4680 meters! From here we enjoy a magnificent view of the mountains, valleys and lakes, it is even possible on a clear day to see as far as Lake Maracaibo to the north, and the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the south. The descent follows more or less the same path as the ascent. We collect our equipment and continue our hike towards a magical path that winds between the mountains.

Accommodation: Night in a tent.
Communication: No network.
