Trekking Toro peak in the Andes of Venezuela

Among the highest and most beautiful peaks in Venezuela is Toro Peak, one of our favorites! A very nice hike passing through the picturesque little village of Los Nevados which is a must. Far off the beaten track, this tour is recommended.

  • -The small picturesque village of Los Nevados is a must.
  • -Numerous drinking water sources.

  • - Technical hike which should only be organized from mid-December to mid-May when the weather conditions are the most favorable for a question of safety.

Day 1: Los Nevados to Toro Peak Base Camp

From Mérida it will take us about 3 to 4 hours in a 4*4 by public transport to get to Los Nevados, the starting point of the hike at 2600 meters above sea level. This picturesque village is a must in Venezuela, with its cobbled streets, small shops and breathtaking view of the valley. If you have time, we recommend an overnight stay in one of the small hostels. We enter the Sierra Nevada National Park after registering at the warden's office. The walk is done by a well marked path in a valley bottom but the slope does not weaken until reaching our camp point at 3800 meters after 6 to 7 hours of walking. The tent will be set up near the Alto de la Cruz pass.

Accommodation: Night in a tent.
Communication: No network.

Day 2: Ascent of Toro Peak.

The path of the day before disappears in favor of a few cairns, too often! In places they are so numerous that they can indicate the wrong direction, follow the guide! The climb is very steep in places and requires taking your time. We will meet the last water points before attacking a large scree where the use of a helmet is mandatory. You will need to show good balance to move between blocks of stones weighing several tons to sneak up to the summit at nearly 4740 meters above sea level. The view of Mérida is breathtaking as well as of most of the neighboring high peaks which are close to every 5000 m. The descent will be done by the same path. Return to base camp (3800 meters above sea level) after 4 to 5 hours of walking.

Accommodation: Night in a tent.
Communication: No network.

We will leave early from the Pic Toro base camp. We will walk by the same path as on the way to the small village of Los Nevados where we will have to arrive at noon before the departure of the 4*4 back to Mérida, that is to say about 4 to 5 hours of walking. Arrival in Mérida at the end of the afternoon.
